I received an email recently to engage with Planning NSW's latest community engagement initiative. I was bracing myself for some hideous online survey with hundreds of questions. So was pretty thrilled to see this interactive map with drag and drop pins to let the department know:
I love the language choice of these 2 simple options. Don't be negative and just hating on things. Give some real feedback and think about how you can solve a problem (change). Social Pin Point lets you easily collect community opinion with an interactive map that lets users drop a pin with comments which are searchable and locate-able.
Forget the post-it notes and gigantic maps at your next community engagement meeting. Just bring a few laptops or iPads and get users to zoom in on the virtual map and give instant comments for change or kudos. See what others are saying about the area and use the "likes" and "dislikes" icon to agree or disagree with other comments. Social Pin Point's website. Planning NSW's #mysydney engagement.

So you think Social Media is just about facebooking? Well so did I until about a year ago. I was once dating a guy who was a Social Media analyst and I used to dismiss it as being an excuse to use facebook at work. I should have listened to him. I'm now a total convert and use Twitter and Instagram to follow the latest trends, conversations, people around the world and locally. I recently followed a trail of Instagram users to find cyclists living in Japan who could give me tips about a bike trip I had been contemplating from Tokyo to Kyoto. So what you're not planning a trip to Japan. How about checking out local restaurants and cafes. We're living in times where people might not be able to buy a house but they can afford to spend a bit on a fancy place to dine at. We also live in an age where we require the most up to date pictures and reviews. People are more likely to eat at a restaurant after seeing photos of the meal. We call that food porn. Businesses need to get onto social media to promote themselves and the local area. Just checkout White Horse Coffee's instagram feed. Try it out now. Search for anything and see what photos pop up that match.
Woohoo I just registered for this week's Sydney Cycle Hack.
Basically it's a "hackathon" over a weekend with a think tank to solve cycling barriers. Thinking of solutions, ideas to encourage people to get on their bike. Dates: 19th June 2015 - 21st June 2015 Place: UTS Tickets: $38 to cover food My ideas:
What makes a government decide to rip up a bike lane that brings so much happiness to its people?31/5/2015 I'm trying to control my blood pressure as I write and research about the College St bike lane removal project.
It's absurd that the plans of a local council voted in by its residents can have its plans overruled by another government. I can't stop thinking about the former disgraced Toronto mayor, Rob Ford who spent $300,000 to remove bike lanes. When global trends are moving away from super highways, and moving towards sustainable, greener active transport options I'm embarrassed by this government's decision. State government you've failed us. Info about the government's plan to rip out the lane - here Future plans - here Facebook group to save College street. Every wondered where all your Strava data went? Well here it is in beautiful blue neon lights mapped out across the world.
Strava lab has been busy aggregating all their user' cycling and running data and have created heat maps outlining The project is code named Stava Metro and you can use play around with the app here. You can find my Strava details here. A few months back I wrote a letter of concern to the Sutherland council about the lack of business facilities in the area and how this was forcing my company to relocate to the big city with the other 100 million people already working there.
This lead to an email conversation with someone from the Economic Development unit in the shire who encouraged me to get involved with the council's community engagement program. 6 months later I received this letter from the council congratulating me for being selected for the Shire's economic development committee. I'm a bit sceptical of the process. Just seems like council are just ticking the box next to "community engagement" but it's better than nothing and if anything a way to gain insight into local government. |
