I was curious about the state of the cycleway network in my area. So I downloaded various maps from multiple councils, Open Street Maps, the TfNSW Cycleway Finder even tried to create my own metro-style map. I found the TfNSW Sydney Strategic Corridor map, which I overlaid with what I believe is the current cycleway network (based on protected cycleways and shared paths). The result? A glaring picture of how poorly connected the suburbs around Sydney and Parramatta are.
It’s hard to reconcile these gaps in infrastructure with campaigns like "wear visible clothing" to keep children safe. How can we ensure their safety when the fundamentals of a safe and connected cycling network are still missing? It's time to focus on building the infrastructure that will truly make cycling safe for all ages and abilities, especially the next generation now. For those who like numbers, Randwick City Council has about 2.5 kilometres of protected cycleways, on a 323 km road network. That's less than 1% of our road network.
