Japan - Day 1 - Cycling up to Mount Fuji

6/10/2015

Started the ride just outside of Tokyo to avoid the cars. Take the Keio Train line from Shinjuku to Chofu, change for Hashimoto. You can take your bicycle in the train if it is inside a bike bag.
Start: Hashimoto station on the Keio Line, west of Tokyo
Distance: 62.4 km
Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/405848428
Elevation gain: 2,285m
Road Type: On Road, often quiet streets in the mountains, motorbike clubs drive on these roads too, careful off the occasional truck.
Sights: Too many. Mountains, river ways, forests, the lake
Tips: Don't need to carry spare water as there are plenty of vending machines along the way
End: Yamanako
Food: Plenty of stops including a rest stop with udon and a tofu shop. There are restaurants and a massive rest stop in the hills. Best cafe was one nestled near the last climb serving soba and kaki with a bike rack out the front.
Accommodation: Cabin in the forest

Bathurst, NSW (Central New South Wales, aka the country)

I'm in Bathurst, NSW today for a friend's birthday. 200 kilometres west of Sydney. That's a 2.5 hour drive without traffic. Tip: no traffic on the road when you leave at 5:00 am.

Before getting to Bathurst I'd done my google research and had saved a few routes. But as I was driving in I noticed a pathway along the river and decided to be adventurous and try my luck with a random ride. Random Rides for the win!

Distance: 29 kilometres
Road Type: Road, Dirt (my road bike was able to handle the dirt, better with a mountain bike), Bike paths
Difficulty: Only a few hills mostly riding on the bike path.
Highlights:Bike path along Macquarie river, fields of cows and horses, Route of Cox's road
Facilities: Bubblers available along bike path, public toilets at one end of the river
Strava: Activity here

Coffee stop: Piccolo's on William

Update: Warning when travelling to Bathurst, you may be driving in snow on ice so DRIVE CAREFULLY.

I managed to combine my 2 loves over the weekend. Exploring the west on bike. Following the ethnic food trail. Start with a hipster coffee in the inner west, head to Granville for some Lebanese and Turkish goodness. Stop in Smithfield and visit the Dutch shop (hidden in the warehouse district, very, very random) then head to Cabramatta for some Vietnamese madness.

Erskineville - Olympic Park - Granville - Cabramatta - 50 kms - 4 cultures

Road Type: Mostly cycleways
Safety: Very safe

Highlights
  • Hidden cycle way along the M4
  • Little Vietnam (Western side of Cabramatta station)

Most eat
  • Fresh Turkish bread and garlic dip in Granville
  • Three bean coloured drink at a Vietnamese restaurant in Cabramatta

Route
  1. Start in Erskineville
  2. Cooks river cycle way to the Olympic Park
  3. M4 Cycle way (which runs under the M4 along cycle ways) to Granville
  4. Follow bike signs to Smithfield
  5. Follow cycle way to Cabramatta

Commuting to work, Sutherland NSW

Glebe - Sans Souci - Sutherland - 30 kms

Road Type: Mostly cycle lanes, shared roads with bike symbols

Highlights:
  • Sunrise over Botany Bay

Route:
  1. Start in Glebe
  2. Marrickville
  3. Bike path along Sans Souci beach
  4. Back roads in Sutherland

A year ago when someone told me that they cycled to work I thought they were freaking crazy. I currently work in "the shire" about 30 kilometres outside of Sydney. A 30 kilometre trek to work sounded absurd. But after travelling along the Rhine for a week 30 kms sounded easy peasy and it was. I'm loving this ride along the east coast from Sutherland to Sydney. Most of the way is one bike lanes, and bike friendly roads. Yes, I feel safe most of the time. Yes, it's fun. Yes, you should try it one day!

Biking around Canberra the nation's capital

31/10/2014

I'm not sure why it was such a hard sell getting a group of people to spend the weekend in Canberra. Was it the compulsory school bus trip to the nation's capital that has permanently burnt us?
For the handful of friends I managed to round up what a kick ass biking weekend.
Lake Burley Griffith offers 3 different courses for bike riders of all grades. Mini easy rider around the capital and the monuments. Level 2 around the swamp. Level 3 around the countryside.

Cycling from Amsterdam to Cologne along the Rhine river

22/7/2014

This winter break I had plans to meet my good friend Carlee in Berlin. I had 3 weeks off work and no other real plans. Until I discovered the European cycle networks and I found EuroVelo 15, an epic 1000 kilometre ride along the Rhine river from Switzerland to Rotterdam. I was roped in straight away. The only challenge was I didn't have a bike. Sorted after several visits to bikes shops and pawn shops around Amsterdam.

The Plan: Cycle from Amsterdam to Cologne
Timeframe: 1 week
Distance: 350 kms

Start Date: 15th July 2014
End Date: 23rd July 2014

Where did I get my bike from?
I went around a few bike shops in Amsterdam and several second hand bike shops but most of the bikes were cruisers or super pricey. I had nearly given up and was lost in the suburbs of Amsterdam when I found a small shop that was selling Vittorio for 95 Euro.

So how much did the equipment cost?
  • Bike & flat tyre kit - 95 Euro
  • Bike bag - 15 Euro
  • New seat - 30 Euro
  • Service to fix chain - 50 Euro
  • New pedal - 10 Euro
  • New pedal - 10 Euro
  • Cable to tie bag ups - 3 Euro
  • Maps - 10 Euro
  • TOTAL COST = 200 Euro

Here are a few link links
  • Arnhem to Koln map
  • Map

I was prepared for changing flat tyres but things I weren't prepared for were:
  • Pedals fell off - riding 10 Kms to nearest bike shop for repairs
  • Chain skips a link - got it serviced, dodgy link removed
  • Losing my backpack with my passport and wallet - found in some bushes, started stashing a credit card and money in my shoes
  • Falling into bushes of stinging nettle - this burnt for days after. I later found out the remedy is a plant that lives under the nettle
  • Pedals breaking and needing repairs again - solution don't use cheap plastic pedals when cycling for 300 kms
