It's a great place to be if you can create a space where families, children, adults, older people can all enjoy the one activity together. Newcastle managed to bring all the different generations it could reaach out to to come along to the inaugural Newie Night Ride.
There's something about safety in numbers which makes riding in a group a lot safer and fun than if you were riding alone. Last night I had a blast riding with the Cyclotronlights crew using one of seven bikes installed with their prototype lighting system. Cruising along Oxford street (one of Sydney's busiest, some might say trashiest) I was screamed at 3 times. "Oh Ma gawd that's Awesome". "So Awesome", "Awesome". Not the usual abuse I'm used to on the streets when riding. 1 hour with the crew and I'm feeling on fire. As an urban planner I wonder how many people would start riding at night if they could ride with these lights and experience the "awesome" effect. Could Cyclotronlights help people overcome the barrier of feeling unsafe while riding? Sneak Peak behind the scenes
D rocks up 15 minutes late (this is usual I found out later) for our bike pickup. He lost track of time playing around with the Android app to control the lights. We meet the rest of the crew and he does a stack of last minute checks and updates to the lights using his laptop in Taylor Square. As it starts to sprinkle he remembers the Gaffer tape. It's the waterproofer for the open circuits on the lights. A quick reminder that Cyclotron is still in prototyping phase and needs a few more fixes before opening up for crowd funding. Get behind Aussie designers and help these guys get these lights rolling through the night. #DarknessBeMyFriend Totally inspired after watching this epic documentary (Bikes v Cars) about passionate cyclists around the world. I'm kicking off some night rides around Sydney. First one will be this Thursday from Redfern. Ride the streets without any traffic or cars. Get a hit of fresh air. Meet new people. Have a bit of fun. Route: 17 km Starting point: Redfern End point: Erskineville for some kebabs and beers Speed: Leisurely Map: google Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1600736316841321/1601215700126716/ |
